Gurudwara Bangla Sahib: History

Unlike most other Gurdwaras in the country, Gurdwara Bangla Sahib was not first constructed as a temple. Originally owned by Mirza Raja Jai Singh, a senior commander of the 17th-century Mughal Empire and ruler of the Amber Kingdom (later known as Jaipur), it was a home known as Jaisinghpura Palace . This mansion was the residence of Guru Har Krishna during his visit to Delhi in 1664. In the same period, there were serious outbreaks of smallpox and cholera in Delhi. The Guru offered water from the well in the bungalow complex to the affected people as a gesture of support. However, the Guru himself became ill and died in the same house.

Raja Jai Singh donated his house in honor of the late Guru after his demise. As a result, Gurdwara Bangla Sahib was established and became an important Sikh place of worship. Additionally, the king constructed a tank over the well, which is now a distinctive feature of this Gurudwara.

The structure of the original Gurudwara was changed several times over the years. It was renovated by Sikh General Sardar Bhagel Singh Dhaliwal in 1783. However, most of the construction of the present Gurudwara was completed after 1947.

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Architecture

Gurudwara In addition to its magnificent architecture, Bangla Sahib is renowned for its religious significance. The imposing structure is constructed using Sikh architectural design. Although the entire edifice is composed of white marble, its distinguishing feature is the center golden dome atop it. Nishan Sahib, the tall flag staff perched atop the dome, is visible from a distance. There are elaborate carvings on the Gurudwara’s front wall. The enormous water tank inside the complex, known as Sarovar, adds even more visual value to the entire building. The complex houses a school, a hospital, a library, a museum, an art gallery, a community kitchen known as langer, and a water tank in addition to the Gurudwara.

Around 10,000 people get free vegetarian food every day from the Langar Hall of Gurdwara Bangla Sahib. All guests are welcome to attend this community dinner service, regardless of their caste, creed, ethnicity, religion or social class. A large number of volunteers volunteered their time in the community kitchen to assist in the preparation of the lunches.

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Museum

Although it may not be very big, the Baba Baghel Singh Museum inside Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is one of the best sites to learn about the history of Sikhism. The museum also tells the stories of the Sikh martyrs who gave their lives in defense of their faith and the ten Gurus of Sikhism.

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib: Today

Nowadays, one of the most popular tourist and historical places of Delhi is Gurudwara Bangla Sahib. It is equipped with a variety of amenities, such as air-conditioned kitchen, parking spaces for cars and toilets, all of which improve guest convenience. Other facilities at the property are Yatri Niwas, which is a hostel for travelers that offers rooms with en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning or non-air conditioning. Additionally, there are two large halls that can accommodate approximately 500 people.

Every year, a large number of Sikhs visit this Gurudwara to celebrate the birth anniversary of Guru Har Krishna.

Lesser Known Facts about Gurudwara Bangla Sahib

• When Guru Har Krishna decided to help the population of Delhi affected by the plague, he was only eight years old. His other name is Bal Guru.
• They give the Guru the nickname Baal Peer, which translates to “child saint”, because he helped everyone – including the surrounding Muslim population that was suffering from the epidemic.
• It is said that the Guru cured people by giving them holy water.
• It is believed that the water of the Sarovar of Gurudwara Bangla Sahib has healing properties and can cure a variety of diseases.
